What is Crochet? A Beginner’s Guide to Getting Started
Let’s start from the beginning. What is crochet?
Crochet is a handicraft that involves using a hooked needle and yarn, to create fabric.
It’s a versatile art form which allows you to make a wide range of items, by using yarn or thread. More innovative techniques might include the use of other fabrics like wire or twine.
I always knew what crochet was. My auntie, as well as my sister, are expert crocheters and they both produced amazing things. Anyway, I was never really interested or fascinated by it. It seems to me a boring and outdated hobby. Blankets, tablecloths or other garments didn’t look neither appealing or fashionable.
How wrong I was!!!!
One day, a work colleague, who is also a proficient knitter, showed me her finished knitted jumper. I was amazed by the fact she did it herself. I couldn’t stop thinking about the pleasure of learning a craft and turn yarn into something beautiful, trendy and modern. And all by using my hands!!
And just like that, I made an online order of hooks, yarn and nothing more to start my journey.
Similarities and differences between Crochet and Knitting
Spoiler alert to all crochet beginners!! More often than not, people will confuse crochet with knitting and vice-versa. Or just think they are the same thing.
While crochet and knitting have their differences, they also share common ground. Both crafts use yarn to create projects and the same product can be done using both techniques.
Anyway, in crochet, we use a single hooked needle, typically made of metal, plastic, or wood, to create fabric. The hook allows to pull loops through loops, forming a series of interconnected stitches. Crochet stitches are generally taller and have a pronounced texture, resulting in a fabric that is sturdy yet flexible.
On the other hand, knitting involves using two straight or circular needles, often made of metal or wood. With knitting, we work with active stitches on the needle, creating fabric by interlocking loops of yarn. The fabric has a distinct drape and stretch, perfect for creating garments and accessories with a softer and more fluid appearance.
Is crochet the right hobby for you?
You might wonder if crochet is the right thing for you, and if it’s going to become your passion. Well, for me it was an easy decision based on knowing myself and the way I tend to deal with personal projects.
I get excited and bored very quickly. I needed a craft which has short term goals, not overly complicated and which doesn’t require to invest too much money and time to be learned. And I found that crochet fits very well with my attitude and personality.
